The Elmira City School District was awarded the Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) Grant from the US Department of Education. The second round of the grant specifically targeted secondary education. The Elmira High School Student Success Team recognized a need for vocabulary instruction in the content areas. Departments worked to create core vocabulary lists, implement Newsela usage in the classroom, and incorporate consistent building-wide vocabulary routines.
